If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- Take El Camino Real close to 3.5 miles. When you reach the Serra St intersection, turn around, then find us in the first building on your right.
- If you’re coming from the Menlo-Atherton High School for a child’s dental visit, take Ravenswood Ave to El Camino Real, then continue with the same directions as above.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Originally known as Fair Oaks, Atherton began as a flag stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1866, primarily serving the affluent estate owners north of Menlo Park within the Rancho de las Pulgas. As Menlo Park sought to incorporate Fair Oaks into its jurisdiction in 1923, local property owners decided instead to incorporate independently, naming their new town after Faxon Dean Atherton, a prominent early property owner. Atherton was officially incorporated on September 12, 1923, establishing itself as a strictly residential community.
Atherton has evolved significantly from its early days as a seasonal retreat for San Francisco’s elite, who built grand summer homes along its once muddy winter roads. The town has transitioned from vast estates to more subdivided properties, especially during the 1940s and 1950s.
Today, Atherton maintains its residential character, adorned with native oaks and other ornamental trees across its six square miles. The town is home to around 6,995 residents and remains one of the most prestigious areas in Silicon Valley, with recreational spaces like the 22-acre Holbrook-Palmer Park, reflecting its historical commitment to maintaining a serene and exclusive living environment.
