When Are Tooth-Colored Fillings Used?
The main reason patients need a filling is because of a cavity—a small pocket of dental decay that leaves a hole in your tooth and puts you at risk for infection. Using a tooth-colored filling, usually made of composite resin or porcelain, our dentists fill up the hole left behind from the cavity.
While this is by far the most common use of these fillings, this process is also used to repair cracked teeth or teeth that have been worn down. Behaviors like nail-biting and teeth-grinding can damage your teeth and the filling can restore the function and shape.
Steps of Getting a Filling
Getting a filling is something you may not look forward to, but the process is much more streamlined and comfortable than ever before.
When you get a filling, the steps go like this:
- Local Anesthesia: First, one of our dentists will give you a local anesthetic to numb you, so you don’t feel the process.
- Removing the Decay: One of our caring dentists then removes the decayed part of the tooth using our high-end dental laser.
- Cleaning the Tooth: After the decay is gone, we will prepare for the filling by cleaning out any debris. If the decay is near the tooth’s nerve, we might apply a liner or a base to protect the nerve.
- Filling the Tooth: The dentist then fills the cleaned cavity with a filling material. We use tooth-colored composite resins that blend seamlessly with the natural color of your teeth.
- Polishing the Filling: Lastly, your dentist will polish the filling—smoothing the edges of the filling material and ensuring it looks and feels natural with your bite.
The entire process usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and location of the cavity and the type of filling material used. It’s normal to experience some sensitivity or discomfort in the treated tooth for a few days after the procedure. However, this should subside on its own. If it persists, contact our office for a follow-up visit.
