Menlo Park, a city rich in history, began its journey in the 18th century as land inhabited by the Ohlone people and became part of the Rancho de las Pulgas land grant in 1795. The modern identity of Menlo Park was shaped in 1854 when Irish immigrants Dennis J. Oliver and D.C. McGlynn purchased land and erected the iconic “Menlo Park” arch.
The development of the city was further propelled by the establishment of a railroad station named after this arch in 1863, catalyzing its growth into a suburban hub for San Francisco businessmen. The original arch, a landmark until its destruction in 1922, lent Menlo Park its name, which precedes the establishment of other places named after it, including Menlo Park in New Jersey.
The area saw significant development during both World Wars. It hosted Camp Fremont during World War I, which briefly housed up to 27,000 troops and laid foundational infrastructure in the city. Post-World War II, the area continued to develop with contributions from Stanford University, housing an influx of students under the G.I.
